Delaware lies on the east coast of the USA. It is well-known and very popular for its tax-free shopping, especially in the neighbouring states. Delaware’s capital is the city of Dover, which has about 33,000 citizens.
In between the many historical buildings in the city lies the “Schwartz Center”. This center hosts many shows like comedies. It was recently refurbished and modernised, to be re-opened in 2001. Beside this center, you will find a lot of cultural activities in the city. Every year there are the famous festivals, starting on the 4th of July until St. Patrick’s day (2nd Monday in March). The Delaware Public Archives can be used as a source of information about all the festivals and cultural activities that happen in the city as well as its history. The John Dickinson plantation in Dover offers its visitors a view into the historic times of cotton plantations. Horse carriages take you back to times where highways and internet didn’t exist yet. Delaware’s largest city, Wilmington, offers a nice opportunity for a break after driving down the Interstate 95. About 2 kilometers from the town’s center you’ll find the Delaware Art Museum. This museum is well known for its collection of American art since 1840 until today. It offers three Galleries and regularly changing historical exhibitions. You’ll find the park with the alcoholic name Brandywine Creek State Park at about 5 miles from the city of Wilmington. It is considered the State’s best “Picnic park”, and has nice trails that can be enjoyed before or after the picnic. In addition, it has a lovely nature center, which is worth a visit. New Castle, situated about 5 miles south of Wilmington, is a place with restored colonial houses, cobble streets and historical sites along the Delaware River. New Castle was founded by the Dutch and later on governed by the British.
A particular highlight of Delaware are the wonderful beaches on the Atlantic coast. From Cape Henlopen State Park in the North until Fenwick Island in the South the route can be enjoyed best by car, especially Route 9 takes you along most breathtaking vistas. Obviously this road is never meant to travel fast: to enjoy this coastal tour you should take some time and relax. On roads like these one realises the value of the expression “the journey is the reward”. The most beautiful beach no doubt is the Dewey Beach with its impressive sand dunes. Party animals will love the town of Dewey Beach, which is well known for its night life. For those who enjoy the day more there are ample opportunities to go sailing with either motor- or sailing ship. In the harbours of Rehoboth Bay and Delaware Bay, these ships can be rent and the wide Atlantic Ocean can be explored from here. Rehoboth, which was long known as the getaway for homosexuals, is one of the old coastal towns. Nowadays everybody enjoys the nice beaches of this town. Rehoboth Avenue, with its wide variety of restaurants is the place to go for a bite after a long day on the beach. In addition, here one will easily find a suitable souvenir to bring home. Although underestimated as holiday destination; the nice cities, parks, and beaches of Delaware are most certainly worth a visit!
