Connecticut and its splendid green park and city combination

Idyllic groves, snug floods and picturesque houses – little Connecticut, just east of powerful New York City, is probably the most charming state in the USA. Somehow everything here seems to breathe

aristocracy, which clearly has to do with its 18th century British roots. The large manors with their Victorian archways, the tidy little towns, the ever present tradition – Connecticut is New England in all its aspects.

Strolling on Yale University campus – the neogothic constructions all around, and hearing the laughter of students – you feel as if bathing in history. It makes you think of all those master brains that used to study here, and makes you wonder about the exceptional aura of this place. There are only three universities in the USA older than Yale. With its trust volume of 18 million US dollar, there are only two richer universities, and together with Harvard, Yale is certainly the most renowned university in the country. It is situated in the city of New Haven, which obviously bears it mark throughout the town. For example, the amount of pubs, bars, and restaurants is quite large considering its size (124,829 citizens). In addition, it has a nice maritime atmosphere due to its unique position at the Atlantic Ocean. In short: a must-see city! What’s more, did you know that president and stereotype Texan nr 1, George W. Bush was born near the docks of New Haven and not somewhere under an oil spring?

As mentioned before, traditions are important in Connecticut, and not without a cause. After all, this state is considered the cradle of American democracy. Its nick names “Constitution State” and “Provision State” illustrates this. The first name refers to the fact that Connecticut was the first state to establish an independent constitution. The second dates back to its role in the independence war. Although hardly any battles have taken place here, this little state was considered the backbone of the American troops since most of the food supplies came from here. The state’s emotional history is kept alive in its countless interesting museums. Together, these museums make Connecticut the place to for those interested in American history.

Nowadays, Connecticut has a somewhat less glamorous role: that of insurance stronghold. However, for example the city of Hartford, the world’s “insurance capital”, has more to offer than boring insurance business; it also harbours the must-see house of Mark Twain, spiritual father of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

For those aiming for some slighter fare, there are ample opportunities to enjoy the long sandy beaches, or bathe in the Atlantic swells. Alternatively you could just get into your car, leisurely drive around and enjoy the magnificent coastal landscapes or picturesque cities, or simply enjoy the hospitality of the local people in this lovely little state.
