Liverpool is a city and a Metropolitan Borough of Merseyside and can be found along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary in the North-West of England. Liverpool has been awarded the “Capital of Culture for 2008” Inhabitants of Liverpool are often
referred to as Liverpudlians but are also known as “scousers” that comes from the name of the local meal “scouse” a meat stew. The word “scouse” is also used to describe the accent and/or dialect of the area.
There is so much to see and do in Liverpool. One of the main reasons for its popularity with tourists is due to The Beatles. Visitors can see the Beatles Story- a museum dedicated to the lives of The Beatles which is located on Albert Dock. Staying on the Albert Dock why not visit The Liverpool Tate Gallery where hundreds of interesting exhibitions have been displayed from paintings and photography to sculpture. The Walker Art Gallery covers art from medieval times to the 21st century and the museum is housed in a fascinating building. The Maritime Museum is also interesting an offers an insight into the history of Liverpool’s port.

Two other fascinating buildings that cannot be missed are the Anglican Cathedral- where visitors can take a tour through the various parts of the building including the vestry tower that overlooks the city. The Metropolitan Cathedral is a world recognised building due to its modern circular design and is well worth a visit. Further famous buildings include The Three Graces of Liverpool’s Waterfront- The Royal Liver Building with its huge green “Liver Birds” perched on the top, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. Liverpool also has an exciting nightlife to offer. Visit the various bars, pubs and clubs that can be found around the city. Start off in Bold Street and work your way down to the famous Matthew Street where the equally famous Cavern Club can be found. If you visit Liverpool in August, don’t miss the Matthew Street Festival that is held every year- during this time the streets are filled with people and celebration. Liverpool is also a great place for those of you that love to shop. Along with St. Johns Precinct, the MET Quarter, and the newly opened Liverpool One complex- you will be guaranteed to find what you are looking for. For those of you that are interested in theatre and concerts, be sure to visit one of Liverpool’s theatres- choose from the Royal Court- where pop concerts are usually held. Catch a musical in the Liverpool Empire or relax and enjoy opera in the Liverpool Playhouse. The Liverpool Everyman always has some interesting plays to see and boasts a Bistro with delicious meals. Don’t leave the city without having a tour around one or both of the famous Football Grounds- Liverpool Anfield and/or Everton’s Goodison Park. Make sure you also take the Ferry across the Mersey- feel the sea breeze in your hair as well as enjoy some excellent opportunities to take some photographs of Liverpool’s magnificent waterfront buildings.
