Malaga is however worth visiting not only due to its great weather. Recently has been nominated as European Capital of Culture due to its great cultural offer.
Malaga was first a Phoenician colony and later came under the control of the Greeks, Carthaginians, Visigoths, Arabs, and Christians. Today it is a maritime city rich in culture, some of whose remains are on view at the Archaeological Museum.  As expected, the major new museum devoted to Malaga-born Pablo Picasso is dynamising the city. He is actually the city's famous son (not counting Antonio Banderas of course!) and there are also several galleries showing his work. His birthplace in Plaza Merced is today an archive of his life and works and open to the public; the entrance is absolutely free. The city has also  a newish museum of contemporary art as well as new fine arts museum which is being built. Also worth a visit is the nearby castle which was rebuilt by the Moors and is today a traditional parador (state hotel) with superb panoramic views.
In the city take place also lot of different cultural and musical festivals during summer as well as winter season. The fairs and festivals in Malaga is where the Malagueños’ fun-loving and social spirit come to the forefront.

Malaga is not however only a cultural centre. The centre of the city presents the visitor with narrow old streets and wide, leafy boulevards, beautiful gardens and impressive monuments, fashionable shops and a cultural life that is coming to the fore as never before. While in Malaga you must also try the local food. The bars, cafes offer great tapas or simply small portions of many different dishes, which are an Andalusian tradition. For these you will have to only pay as little as 6 Euros !
Malaga is famous for its "pescaito frito", a selection of small fried fish such as sardines and red mullet, best washed down with a glass of ice cold fino at one of the many old fashioned bodegas in town.
