Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain and is famous for a number of reasons. Madrid is also very popular with tourists. Madrid has a wealth of museums, one of which is the Museo Del Prado which is a highly acclaimed museum throughout the world. The museum houses artwork from Rubens, Goya and Raphael to Bolticelli and Bosch.There is the majestic Palacio Real- the royal palace is no longer used as a residence but is now a very popular tourist attraction- not all rooms are open to the public but what can be seen is very interesting and the gardens surrounding the palace are particularly beautiful.The most beautiful of the many grand squares in Madrid is the Plaza de Cibeles. At its centre is the Fuente de la Cibeles-this is a fountain which features a statue of the goddess Ceres being pulled along in a chariot.Get your bearing and take a tour of the city in an open top bus. Buy a ticket from a company that lets you hop on and off so that you can spend longer at the places that you want to visit. Bull-fighting is popular in Spain and can be a very exhilarating experience to watch. San Isidro takes place on the 15th May and is Madrid’s main annual festival marking the start of the city’s bull fighting season. The food in Spain is commonly called Tapas and consists of a wide variety of small appetisers that are served in most bars on ordering a drink. A great way to sample all of the wonderful and delicious dishes Spain has to offer! Make sure you order Paella at least once during your stay!
Madrid is also great for shopping- most of the shops can be found centralised around Plaza Mayor where you can find almost everything. There are also several flea markets that take place throughout the city. The Rastro is the most famous of the flea markets and takes place on Saturdays and Sundays- You can be sure to pick up some interesting souvenirs there!
