Canterbury

Are you an outdoor fan who likes to be active? At the same time, do you enjoy wine and comfort? The Canterbury Region is just the place to go.
The vast Canterbury plains and the foot of the Southern Alps are covered in green fields and blue rivers. The mountains are clearly

visible from Christchurch, and the panorama is breathtaking.

Adventurers will be delighted with the countless opportunities to shed some adrenaline: rafting, bungee-jumping, and high-speed jet skiing make for an action-packed programme that will send you to bed tired.

If you prefer a quiet holiday, you can enjoy the unique beauty and tranquility of the Southern Alps with a glass of wine from one of the numerous vineyards that produce the famous New Zealand wine.
Whether you’re seeking excitement or just want to indulge in the beauty of nature, you will find what you are looking for on a trip through the Canterbury Region.
The central base for a trip into the country is Christchurch located in the centre of the region. Here you can book your car hire and get ready for your adventure.

The following day trip is just an example of the fun you can have in Canterbury.
Leave Christchurch on highway 73 travelling in a westerly direction. It takes you right into the Canterbury Plains, where you get a great view of the Alps across green meadows. Take a short break on one of the vineyards and sample the local delicacies.
Continuing on highway 73 you will get to the mighty Waimakariri River. You can hire a jet boat at several points along the river. Leaving the river behind you will notice that the land starts to rise: the foothills of the Alps.
Continue in the same direction until you have reached Arthur’s Pass. The small town is on the historic road to the west coast in the middle of a namesake national park. Arthur’s Pass National Park is perfect for hiking trips; the trails take you past stunning waterfalls, astonishing canyons and dense forests. Spend the rest of the day in the park and stay the night in a lodge before returning to Christchurch.

This is just one of countless possible day trips in the area. It will take at least one week to discover all of the Canterbury Region with its thermal springs up north, and ski areas and spectacular mountain views in the south.
