Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country and is very popular with tourists particularly those who are looking to celebrate their hen or stag weekend.

Amsterdam is definitely guaranteed to offer you everything you need.

The Damrak is the main high street in Amsterdam and is lined with hotels, bars and restaurants not to mention the notorious sex museum. Central station can also be found here with its tall ceilings and is always bustling with commuters and tourists day and night. Carry on along the Damrak and you will find the town hall on the right and a little further along Madame Tussauds. There is also a large shopping centre along with market stalls which offer everything from socks to flags!

When you have spent enough, make your way back to the water, the canals are Amsterdam's biggest attraction: last year, over 3 million people enjoyed a sightseeing canal cruise. Boot trip companies can be found all along the Damrak and companies that offer English guides can be easily found.

Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world and is a centre of bicycle culture with good provision for cyclists such as bike paths and bike racks. Be careful crossing the roads, there are a number of lanes- not only for buses and trams but for bicycles too!

Amsterdam has a wealth of museums; the Van Gogh museum is particularly spectacular for those of you who are a fan of his work. From the famous daffodils to some of his lesser known works can all be found under one roof. Staying on an artist theme, Amsterdam was also the home of Rembrandt- he lived and worked in the city and his house has been restored to its former glory.

A visit to the house of Anne Frank should not be missed. The Jewish girl and her family hid in the Annexe during the Nazi era. A truly moving experience. Be sure to go early or late to avoid the queues.

There are thousands of bars and cafes throughout the city so when you need a rest from all the shopping and museum visits you won’t have any problem finding somewhere.

At night, slip into your glad-rags and get back out there for a night on the tiles!
