Zakynthos

Zakynthos or Zante is the third largest of the Greek Islands in the Ionian Sea. The island is rich in beauty, history and culture and offers holiday makers wide range of activities to see and do.For those of you who are water lovers, the island has a lot of offer.

It is not very difficult to find the array of water-sports offered on the shoreline from banana boat trips to paragliding.

Glass bottom boat trips are also offered around the island, a great way to not only enjoy the stunning views above water but they allow you to gaze down into the clear blue water and catch a glimpse of all the underwater life the Ionian Sea has to offer. Half way into the boat trip, the organisers often make a stop at a nearby beach for an hour or so for some relaxing, sun-bathing and swimming. Be sure to remember your snorkel to carry on making your underwater discoveries.

A popular tourist attraction is the “Smugglers Cove”- the beach is only accessible by boat. There you will find a shipwreck of a coaster that was washed ashore whilst smuggling tobacco over 20 years ago.

Zakynthos is very famous for its logger headed turtles (Caretta Caretta) that come to the island to breed. Zakynthos is one of their only breeding grounds in the Mediterranean Sea. The turtles come out at night to lay their eggs. At certain times of the year it is also possible to take a boat trip out to some of these areas where they nest- an absolutely fascinating sight! The people of Zakynthos work hard to preserve their natural environment.



Solomou Square is dominated by the statue of the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos. The square is teeming with people on summer evenings, when locals and tourists come here to enjoy a glass or two of Retsina accompanied by a hearty plate of mousaka or stifado.

There are many beautiful and picturesque villages in Zakynthos- be sure to visit some of the bars and cafes, enjoy a glass of ouzo and watch the world go by.
