Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and one of the largest in the Aegean Sea. It is situated 17.7km from the coast of Turkey. The island is home to the Rhodian deer which can often be found roaming the cypress forests. There are also stone statues of the deer on the huge columns at Mandraki harbour- be sure to take your camera to capture some of the breathtaking views across the clear blue sea. Rhodes has the oldest tourist history of all the Greek islands and is famous all over the world not only for its natural beauty but also its cultural heritage. The island has many interesting places to visit, such as the Valley of the Butterflies; the village of Trianda near the site of ancient Lalyssos (Lalissos) on the top of Filerimos Hill, where the 15th century monastery of the same name also stands, along with the ruined temples of Athena and Zeus Poliea in the ancient acropolis; Kameiros (Kamiros) and the ruins of the Dorian city; Kalithea with its thermal baths; Koskinou, Afandou, Faliraki and Rodini.Rhodes has many beautiful beaches to relax on as well as many secluded coves to explore. If you are more inclined to get your feet wet or you are looking for a bit of excitement there is a wide range of water sports offered on the island. Sailing trips and cruises are also available around the island. For the tourist who would like to broaden their horizons a little, there is also the opportunity to take a trip across to visit Turkey. Rhodes offers something for everyone, if you want to enjoy a quiet meal there are plenty of romantic quiet spots around the island and for those who are looking for something a little livelier- take a wonder into vibrant Lindos where you can find a selection of bars and a few clubs that stay open until the early hours of the morning. Greek food is one of the many reasons that visiting Greece can be extremely enjoyable. Greek food consists mainly of seafood, pastas, breads, soups, gyros, and small dishes to be enjoyed socially. Make sure you try either the Mousaka or Stifado as a main course and for those of you with a sweet tooth try the delicious Greek favourite- Baklava- made with filo pastry layers, nuts and honey. Last but not least finish off with your complementary ouzo which is offered in most bars and restaurants- a perfect way to finish off the evening.
