Finland is a Nordic country situated in the Scandinavian region of Northern Europe. Finland has boundaries with Sweden to the West; Russia to the east and Norway to the North while Estonia lies to its South across the Gulf of Finland. The capital of Finland is Helsinki, a beautiful city with plenty to see and do for all the family- The Helsinki Zoo in Korkeasaari is a great day out- there are over 150 animal species and almost 1000 plant species to see. There are a number of green spaces where you can have a picnic or instead eat at one of the many refreshment kiosks and cafes. There is a safari shop where visitors can take home their very own cuddly lizard or elephant!For a truly exhilarating, not to mention hair-raising day- visit Linnanmäki theme park. There are rides for all ages from the Ghost train to the new rollercoaster which is due to open in summer 2008- The Salama- 420m long and reaches a height of 17m! If you are looking for something a little more relaxing, Suomenlinna is definitely the place to visit. Suomenlinna is located in the Bay of Helsinki and is home to the Svaeborg Fortress- a major monument of military architecture and is over 250 years old. Suomenlinna has six museums, there are guided walking tours and a number of exhibitions. If you prefer, you can simply just enjoy the parks, sea and the nature of archipelago. Suomenlinna is open all year round. |
