Hungary

Discover Hungary and the many different regions of this central European state. Hungary is split into two lowland plains. In the west, you drive over the small and big lowlands of the country. Here you’ll be met with a slightly hilly landscape, ornamented with many agricultural fields. The big lowland is

spread over a large part of Hungary and has a few stony and sandy areas. When driving through the big lowland you will not only discover beautiful forest areas, but also countless tobacco and corn fields, as well as sunflower fields which throw a beautiful yellow colour on the area during their blossoming period. Mountains also dominate Hungary’s landscape. The Bükk mountain range starts in the north-east of the country and runs through Hungary right up to the Bakony Forest in the west. Beautiful forests, hillsides and valleys break up the Hungarian mountain range. A special place to make a day trip to is the hotsprings on the outskirts of the mountain range.
But not only the landscape of Hungary will amaze you, the cities in Hungary are also intersting and provide a rich contrast to the quieter areas. You definitely shouldn’t miss them when driving in your rental car through Hungary.
The biggest and most interesting cities of the country are Debrecen, Miskolc, Szeged, Pécs and Gyor with 130 000 to 225 000 inhabitants. The biggest city of the country after these five major cities is of course the Hungarian capital Budapest with 1.69 million inhabitants. Budapest lies directly on the Danube and has many sights to see. Visit this impressive city and discover everything Budapest has to offer. The statue of liberty atop the Gellért Mountain reigns over the city, as well as the Castle Mountain which is home to the imposing, once royal castle. Today you can pay a visit to a gallery and the national museum which are located there.
The Matthew Church, the Parliament House, the National Theatre and the Palace of Arts are also worth seeing.
The city is renowned for the nine bridges which cross the Danube and they are spectacular to look at. These bridges connect the suburbs that lie on the Danube in a particularly impressive way. Next to the Danube is the Váci Utca, an old trading street which makes up the main shopping street in Budapest.
On your way back from the city through the countryside, you should drive west. Here you will find the famous Lake Balaton, which is a popular place to relax and recuperate for both locals and visitors from all around the world. On a trip through the state of Hungary, you should make a few stop-overs to try the culinary delights. A dish typical for Hungary is Gulyás, which can be described as a Gulash soup.

Gulyás is traditionally prepared in a clay pot. A visit to Hungary is worth it in many respects. You will be met with lively cities, historical buildings, beautiful scenery and culinary delights. Take the time to drive through Hungary in a rental car and discover all it has to offer!
