 Mazury: “the land of a thousand lakes”.
Fancy a relaxing short break among lakes, forests in Eastern Europe communing with nature? Mazury could be your dream destination. Situated in the north – east part of Poland is considered as one of the
cleanest areas of the country, where you can spend your holidays on clean sandy beaches near crystal clear water. This is why it attracts many sailing and canoeing lovers not only from Poland but from all over the world. Do not worry if you haven’t got the necessary equipment, you can easily rent a yacht, kayak for a very attractive price. There are also many canoeing and kayaking rallies organised on the most beautiful rivers of the region such as: Krutynia, Czarna Hańcza, Biebrza, Rospuda, Łyna, Pisa. The main towns of the area are Elk, Ostroda, Ketrzyn, Gizycko, Mikolajki, Mragowo and Wegorzewo. It is however worth going first to Olsztyn, a lively student town with an attractive night life on offer and a beautiful old town. From Olsztyn is very easy to get to all the small towns or villages by train.
The best places for sailing are Mikolajki or Ruciane Nida, where you can find one of the most interesting canoe routes in Europe – the Kurtynia River ( 91 km long). If you looking for some unusual entertainment you should first definitely visit Mikolajki. The city is very often called “The Perl of Masuria”, which never sleeps. It is one of the largest tourist attractions in Mazury. During the summer season the city offers quite an interesting programme. Starting from volleyball or fishing contests to live music and festivals. You won't be bored; they have tennis courts, horses, night clubs, bowling etc. Thus, you will always find there a tourist drinking a pint of beer by the lake, fishing or sun bathing. If you are a country music fan you can visit Mragowo otherwise Wegorzewo for a very popular rock Open Air festival ( including bands from different parts of Europe and not only ) In the village Grunwald ( in gmina Grunwald ) famous of the Battle of Grunwald (also known as Battle of Tannenberg (1410) you can see a magnificent reconstruction of the battle every year on the 15th of July, where all the knights of Europe are coming to perform all together to remind us one of the most significant battles, which took place in Europe. After the reconstruction of the battle, poles party under the open air till the morning hours. Mazury is also very popular for cycling or hiking. One can find very attractive cycle paths and walking paths along the lakes or in the forest. Sailing in Mazury is even more exciting if you bear in mind the historical heritage of the region. There are Teutonic castles, beautiful churches and palaces as well as Hitler's wartime headquarters. Other “must see” attractions are Swieta Lipka, the pilgrimage church built in magnificent Barogue style. And the last but not least : you shouldn’t be disappointed by the weather there, which in the summer season usually varies between 25- 30 Celsius! |
